- Is There a Replacement Exercise for Walking?
-
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- QUESTION: I am a 48 year old woman who is sedentary. I enjoy walking and
- that's the only exercise I get. Now that fall and winter is upon us I will
- lose the only exercise I enjoy. Can you suggest a replacement exercise to
- carry me through the winter months?
-
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- ANSWER: Even though you may live in an area where the winters are so severe
- that an outdoor activity is made difficult, there are still days when a brisk
- walk is both beneficial and invigorating. It is merely a matter of dressing
- properly, cotton underclothing to absorb perspiration, another layer for
- warmth, and an outer water proof and wind proof layer as protection against
- strong breezes and winds or moisture. The proper choice of shoes is also
- important, both for support and with a proper tread for traction when there
- may be snow or ice on the ground. However there are days when any sane person
- must stay inside, and then you will need a choice of exercises to supplement
- the walking plan you seem to enjoy so much. One good possibility is an
- exercise cycle or other machine in your home. The lack of changing scenery
- can be overcome by either playing a rousing audio tape (my personal
- preferences are Sousa Marches recorded by the Boston Pops Orchestra) or even a
- video to hold your interest while you pump away. Changing the music or tape
- will help overcome the boredom that sometimes comes with indoor exercise.
- Another fine possibility is to purchase one of the many aerobic tapes that
- fill the shelves of book and video stores. Choose one that fits your physical
- condition and life style; a low impact program can fulfil the needs of most
- people. You might wish to explore the possibilities offered to you by a local
- health club or "Y". Many provide regularly scheduled exercise sessions,
- aerobic classes of many types, as well as the opportunity to exercise at your
- own pace and follow your own program. Many have jogging tracks, which are
- just as useful for a brisk walker who wishes to keep in shape but at a slower
- rate. Many are equipped with pools, which can furnish you with still another
- exciting exercise possibility, that of swimming. This is an excellent choice,
- and can help you keep the gains you have achieved with your walking program.
